Henry County Democratic Women Announce 2009 Events

On Saturday, July 18, Henry County Democratic Women are planning a day excursion to Put-in-Bay, Ohio.  The group will carpool to the Miller Ferry Docks on Catawba Island and cruise out to South Bass Island. There are lots of interesting shops, restaurants, and island activities for the group to enjoy. Invite a guest!

The September event will feature tips for “living green.”  Why recycle an old computer? How can electric bills be lowered? What are ways to save water in the home? How can trash be reduced to save on hauling? There will be experts on hand to provide guidelines for green living. The event will also include a dinner and a costume contest (optional) for those who would like to participate. Prizes will be awarded to those who come dressed in green or in recycled materials.

November will bring the yearly programs to a close.  Many local, national, and international organizations exist only through volunteer efforts.  New Orleans is being rebuilt partially due to the help of volunteers.  American 4-H and scouting programs are dependent on volunteers. The success of a political campaign depends on volunteers to promote the candidate’s message. Megan Meyer, director of the Center for Nonprofit Resources, Toledo, and Emily Avery, volunteer center manager of the United Way of Greater Toledo will be speaking on the topic of how to build and maintain a volunteer network.  There will be an international theme dinner and massage therapists will be on hand to provide relaxation for the volunteers.

Dates for the April, September, and November events will soon be announced.

Your participation and suggestions in the planning of the four programs would help a lot. Contact one of the officers (LeAnn Hall, 419-966-0361; Becky Schlinder, 419-439-3836; Cara Finney, 419-822-1193; Megan Lytle, 419-438-4484) or email hall_leann@hotmail.com.

Henry County Edges Closer to Blue

John McCain carried Henry County on November 4th, but the Republican margin was greatly reduced from 2004. McCain garnered 56% of the county vote while Barack Obama took 42%. In 2004 George W. Bush received 66% of the vote while John Kerry took 34%. Thanks go to all of the volunteers who manned phone lines, made door-to-door visits and kept the headquarters in extended operation during the campaign. Narrowing the gap by this substantial margin could not have been accomplished without you!

County Candidates Fare Well at the Polls

Local Democratic candidates were supported by county voters during the November General Election. Candidate for Henry County Commissioner Rich Myers retained his seat on the board, defeating Republican challenger David Cordes. Engineer Randy Germann, Recorder Sara Myles, and Treasurer Cal Spiess all ran unopposed and returned to their offices. In the race for the open seat on the Board of County Commissioners Republican Bob Hastedt defeated Democrat Robin Weirauch. Robin ran a great campaign, and we look forward to her future efforts in public service and with the Democratic party.
